78 yrs in business 1933-2011, our first (and only) open days in school holidays is stet to be a funtastic and incredible hands on experience.
Barter and Sons Farm and Hatchery has been hatching and selling quality laying chickens to families everywhere.
City Families are doing full circle and returning to the hen house and realizing the benefits of keeping chickens in their backyard. We are seeing an overwhelming interest and calls from families wanting to keep chickens. Most have fond memories of when they were kids and their parents or grandparents had chickens in the back yard. People and families or all ages are beginning to set up a coop again. Everyday we are talking to people looking to keep chickens and asking questions on how to go about it. Some just can’t quite remember the process and need a little refreshing; most are starting out and needing a little reassurance and advice. All want to produce their own fresh tasting food and recycle their scraps and create a little peck of kindness for their children along the way.
WE will show you how keeping chickens at home is made easy and get u started.
Which chickens lay best? We will share with you our family traditional secrets that Barter and Sons (has always has shared), but well proven. Celebrating 78 years this year, as a family business, now we are a business that has seen many happy customers returning for the best layer hens bred naturally in a free-range environment. This means the hens and roosters are able to move about freely. We can give advice on choosing your best layer that best suits you, to take home as your new family addition.
This school holidays will be a one off opportunity for children to really come out of their shell and see every area of the egg to chicken process.
Everyone will have the opportunity all day to see doesn’t really matter what day u visit, it’s all happening all day, see embryo development inside the shell. Ever wondered how to tell if there’s a chicken inside? We will show you inside the egg and how to do it. Actually its hands on you will do it and your kids will see and learn by DOING all day!

As most city people’s only experience is, this is real. Just Beautiful.
- Chicks hatching out in front of your eyes. Now this is something everyone will remember, a real life birth, you know, even I still get a kick out of seeing that last push and the chick hatch, its goose bumping, after experiencing it you’ll never forget that.
- Hey what about a pet chicken that can be with u indoors, have a stay for the day like your dog or cat might, without the “poop” everywhere, we’ll show you how.
- We have been keeping our BIGGEST and smallest egg for you to see.
- “Candling” eggs, have a go at that one, you’ll learn fast and be amazed.
- Opportunity to purchase day olds to point of lay hens. All Hens! Remember we know which are hens or roosters. Look for our red spot chicken specials on the day.
- Coop display and home starter kits will get u on your way to keeping your own chickens at home.
